The Commission
A merchant of Ujjain came to the guild with a strange request: "Build me a chariot for a road that has not yet been travelled, in a season that has not yet arrived, for a load no one has yet weighed." The guild-master called four craftsmen — Karta, Drashta, Yojaka, and Yantri — and bade them work together. None of the four alone had the answer. Each, alone, had a way of failing.

Karta the Doer — Think, Act, Observe
Karta worked first. He did not plan. He thought a moment ("the wheels first"), then acted ("I will cut these spokes"), then watched what happened ("the wood split, the spokes were too thin"). Then he thought again, in light of what he had seen. Step by step, observing each result, he made his way forward. When the road changed, he changed with it. When a spoke broke, he learned. He was slow, but he was rarely wrong about what he had just done — because he had just done it.

Drashta the Mirror — Reflect
But Karta could not see his own face. Each evening Drashta walked the workshop, picked up Karta's day's work, and held it to the lamp. "Here, the joint is loose. Here, the angle is wrong. The wheel, by morning, will not bear the load." Karta, who had been satisfied, now saw what he had missed. He revised. By the third day Drashta had a rule of her own: "I will look three times, no more. After that, perfection becomes paralysis." So they shipped finished work, not perfect work.

Yojaka the Planner — Plan and Execute
Yojaka, the eldest, did not work with his hands. He sat with parchment for two days and wrote the whole chariot down — every joint, every measurement, every order of assembly. Then he handed sealed pages to Karta and said, "Do these in this order; do not improvise." When the road was known and the load could be weighed, Yojaka's plan saved months. When the road changed, his plan became wrong all at once. So Yojaka learnt to write plans for the parts that would not change, and to leave the rest in Karta's hands.

Yantri the Tool-Master — Tool Use
In the corner of the workshop sat Yantri, the silent one, surrounded by a wall of instruments — chisels, awls, plumb-lines, scales, dyes. Each tool had a small wooden tag tied to its handle, written by Yantri herself: what the tool did, when to use it, and — crucially — when not to use it. When Karta needed a measure, he did not invent a new way; he asked Yantri, who handed him the right scale. The tags were short. The tags were honest. When a craftsman picked the wrong tool it was almost always because Yantri's tag had been vague, and she would rewrite it that very evening.

The Chariot That Knew When to Stop
The chariot was finished in time. It rolled out of Ujjain, met the road, met the season, met the unknown load — and held. The four craftsmen had not done one job; they had done four, woven together. When the merchant later asked the guild-master which of them had built the chariot, the old man laughed. "Each, in his place. Karta acted and watched. Drashta looked back, but only thrice. Yojaka planned what could be planned. Yantri kept the tools honest. Together they built the cart. Apart, they would have built four broken halves."
