You run the same prompt twice and get different code. What explains this?
Why A is the answer
AI output is non-deterministic, so responses can vary
GitHub notes the non-deterministic nature of AI, so Copilot may not respond in exactly the same way each time.
In detail
- AI output is non-deterministic.
- The same prompt can give different results, which is another reason to review.
- Do not rely on identical output in automated processes.
Use case
An illustrative scenario, not a real incident.
Two developers type the same prompt and get different code. Neither is broken. AI output can vary, so both results still need review.

Q -->|"Worse each time"| A1["Improve the prompt or context"]Key point: AI output is non-deterministic.
Why the other options are wrong
- B. Your Copilot license has expired, and a fallback model is being used
- An expired license would not explain varied output.
- C. The editor cache is corrupt and needs to be cleared before you retry
- A cache problem is not needed to explain this.
- D. A content exclusion rule changed the output on the second attempt
- Nothing about exclusions changed between the runs.
