There is no AI in the title, but this is the data exam for Microsoft shops. Most AI projects stall on data access, and this proves you can get data in, secure it and keep it fast. It is hands-on in SQL, PySpark and KQL.

Take it if

Your AI data lives in Microsoft Fabric and OneLake.

Skip it if

Your data platform is Databricks, Snowflake or BigQuery. The tools here are Fabric-specific.

Before you start

Check yourself against this list first. If something is missing, close that gap before you pay for an exam.

  • SQL, PySpark and KQLMicrosoft expects all three.
  • You know data loading patternsFull and incremental loads are the base.
  • You have a Fabric workspaceUse a trial capacity to practice. Learn more

What the exam covers

  • Implement and manage an analytics solution30–35%
  • Ingest and transform data30–35%
  • Monitor and optimize an analytics solution30–35%

What to focus on

  • Choosing between Dataflow Gen2, a pipeline and a notebook. This trade-off appears throughout.
  • Full against incremental loads, and handling duplicate, missing and late-arriving data.
  • OneLake shortcuts against mirroring against copying data.
  • Access at every level: workspace, item, row, column, object and file.
  • Real-Time Intelligence: Eventstream, Eventhouse, windowing functions and KQL.
  • Optimizing lakehouse tables, pipelines, warehouses and Spark.
Everything on one mapEvery topic and key idea in this certification.

Lesson 1 of 3, 30–35% of the exam

Manage the solution

A third of the exam, covering security and lifecycle.

Layers of access
Workspace, item, row, column, object and file levels all exist.
Lifecycle
Version control plus deployment pipelines between stages.
Choosing a tool
Dataflow Gen2 for low-code, notebooks for code, pipelines for orchestration.
Layers of Fabric accessEach layer narrows what a person can see.

  B --> C["Object level"]
  C --> D["Column level"]
  C --> E["Row level"]
  D --> F["Dynamic data masking"]

Common trap

Giving workspace access when a row filter is what is needed.

Try it yourself

Apply row-level security and promote a change through a pipeline.

Lesson 2 of 3, 30–35% of the exam

Ingest and transform

This is the job itself.

Incremental loads
Load only what changed, using a watermark or change data.
Shortcuts
Reference data in place, with no copy.
Streaming
Use Eventstream, Spark structured streaming or KQL, with windows that allow for late data.
Getting data into OneLakeAvoid copying when you can reference.

  A -->|"In an operational database"| C["Mirroring"]
  A -->|"Elsewhere, needs transforming"| D["Pipeline or Dataflow Gen2"]
  A -->|"A live stream"| E["Eventstream"]

Common trap

Adding capacity to a full reload that should be incremental.

Try it yourself

Build an incremental load, then a five-minute window that handles late events.

Lesson 3 of 3, 30–35% of the exam

Monitor and optimize

Another third, so reading errors is a core skill.

Small files
Frequent small writes slow Delta tables, so run maintenance such as OPTIMIZE.
Errors
Know how pipeline, notebook, Eventhouse and T-SQL errors show up.
Alerts
Monitor ingestion, transformation and refresh.
Why small files slow a tableCompaction turns many small files into fewer large ones.
flowchart LR
  A["Many small writes"] --> B["Hundreds of small files"]
  B --> C["Slow reads"]
  C --> D["Run OPTIMIZE"]
  D --> E["Fewer, larger files"]
  E --> F["Faster reads"]

Common trap

Ignoring this domain because it feels like operations work. It is a full third.

Try it yourself

Compare a table's read speed before and after OPTIMIZE.

Study plan

  1. Weeks 1 and 2: ingest and transform

    Build one batch load with a pipeline and a notebook. Do it as an incremental load, then handle late data.

  2. Week 3: streaming

    Process events with Eventstream, then the same stream with Spark structured streaming and KQL.

  3. Week 4: secure and ship

    Apply row and column security, sensitivity labels, version control and a deployment pipeline.

  4. Exam week

    Break each pipeline on purpose and practice reading the errors. Then take the mock below.

Exam day and after

  • You can open Microsoft Learn during associate and expert exams, but the clock keeps running. It helps with one lookup and not with twenty, so use it for exact names and limits.
  • Most questions cover generally available features, though preview features can appear if they are widely used.
  • Try the free exam sandbox first so the interface is not a surprise on the day.
  • The three domains are weighted evenly, so one weak area costs you a full third of the exam.
  • The certification page was last updated on October 19, 2026.
